Meet Lois McCreight: A Senior Living Resident Who Has Never Met a Stranger
Most older adults who move into a senior living community say one of the things they enjoy most is the friendships they make. At Saint Therese at St. Mary of the Woods in Avon, Ohio, one resident has turned making connections into an art form.
Spend a few minutes with Lois McCreight and you'll quickly understand why so many people know her by name. Friendly, outgoing and quick with a joke, she has a knack for making people feel welcome.
"Lois has never met a stranger," said Executive Director Michael Helco. "Whether she's greeting visitors, singing our praises or recruiting a dance partner on a moment's notice, she brings warmth, laughter and a contagious zest for life to everyone she meets."
Known for the colorful novelty glasses she often wears perched atop her head, Lois has become something of an unofficial ambassador for the community. Staff members describe her as a jokester who enjoys making people smile and regularly makes her rounds throughout the building to say hello and check in on others.

At 97, Lois has accumulated more than a few stories over the years.
Born and raised in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, she remains proud of her hometown roots. She has accumulated a treasure trove of Punxsutawney Phil memorabilia over the years, from articles and cartoons to T-shirts and hats (see photos below). She's even friends with Bill Freas, the great-grandson of Clymer H. Freas, whose promotion of the local Groundhog Day celebration helped transform it into the internationally recognized tradition it is today.
But there is much more to Lois than her connection to Punxsutawney's famous furry rodent.
She earned a master's degree in history from Boston University and also studied physical education and coaching. While at Boston University, she had the opportunity to hear some of the most influential voices of the 20th century, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and poet T.S. Eliot.
Her career eventually brought her to Northeast Ohio, where she spent 28 years teaching history and physical education at Avon Lake High School. She also coached tennis, a sport she still enjoys following today.
Music, sports and animals have always held a special place in her heart. A lifelong Pittsburgh Pirates fan, Lois fondly remembers watching Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente play during his legendary career.
Lois moved to St. Mary of the Woods in 2015 and has been a familiar face ever since.
She appreciates the welcoming atmosphere, approachable staff and opportunities to socialize. She enjoys exercising in the morning, participating in outings and getting to know fellow residents.
"I try to meet everybody," Lois said.
Anyone who spends time at St. Mary of the Woods knows she has succeeded.
